Crisis Communications Workshop for Government Communicators in Fiji

We deliver a crisis communications workshop in Fiji, designed for government communicators representing a range of ministries and departments. The session focused on enhancing public communication strategies during extreme weather events, a critical and recurring challenge across the Asia-Pacific region.

Strengthening public communication in times of crisis

This practical training session provided participants with essential tools and techniques to effectively manage public information during natural disasters. The content was tailored to reflect the realities of weather-related emergencies common in Pacific Island nations.

Best practices covered in the workshop included:

  • Pre-warning communities and offering proactive guidance
  • Building a robust crisis communications strategy
  • Developing and distributing accurate resources for impacted communities
  • Crafting tailored ‘warn and inform’ messages for diverse stakeholder groups
  • Implementing fast, effective online triage and engagement

Realistic, escalating crisis simulation

To apply these principles, participants were divided into competitive teams and immersed in a four-phase crisis simulation based on an escalating extreme weather incident.

Each phase included structured tasks:

  1. Initial Planning & Preparation – Assess risks and plan communications
  2. Strategic Messaging Development – Create clear, audience-specific crisis messaging
  3. Live Engagement Round – Practice real-time communication and stakeholder interaction
  4. Recovery Planning – Shift focus to post-crisis communications and community recovery

After each phase, teams presented their strategies and received real-time feedback from our expert facilitator—enabling rapid learning, collaboration, and skill refinement.
