How can military organisations get started with social media advocacy?

We work with the Royal Air Force (RAF) to develop storytellers who talk about their work in a real, authentic way that suits them on their own social channels. This style of communications brings the stories of the RAF to the public with a level of authenticity and credibility that cannot be achieved on corporate channels.

We identify and recruit personnel who are already using social media well to talk about their work in a personal, professional manner. We then run workshops and provide remote support to bring these people into a special network of RAF Storytellers, ensuring the Storytellers receive the highest level support and are integral to communications planning.

Social media advocates show what life is like in the military

This program creates a diverse cohort of 25 Storytellers, spanning different ranks, jobs and locations. The Storytellers lead takeovers of RAF social channels, answering hundreds of questions about life in the RAF, from the public and their colleagues. They also generate senior support for social media advocacy and positive media stories in the national news picked up from their posts.

Key results:

  • Identifying and recruiting social media storytellers from all different backgrounds and experiences to share their work online
  • Generating senior support for social media advocacy and positive media stories in the national news
