Supporting ExxonMobil’s Emergency Response Drill in Singapore

We deliver training support for ExxonMobil’s Full-Scale Rapid Response Team (RRT) exercise in Singapore.  Working closely with their Asia Pacific communications teams we prepared and tested crisis communication protocols during a high-impact incident simulation.

Our involvement in the exercise focused on ExxonMobil’s Public Information Officers (PIOs), putting them through a realistic, high-pressure drill designed to simulate a major event at a local refinery.

Simulating a high-stakes crisis scenario

Using our Social Simulator platform, we created multi-channel media environment to replicate the intense scrutiny and complexity of a real-world incident. This included:

  • Breaking news coverage and live video updates to increase urgency and realism
  • Statements from political figures across traditional and social media
  • Social media reports of environmental impact, with strong amplification from environmental NGOs (ENGOs)
  • Compensation claims from affected local businesses, escalating reputational pressure

The simulation was designed to challenge participants in handling misinformation, public expectations, and evolving stakeholder concerns—all under tight time constraints.

Real-time role-play and media pressure

Our expert facilitators added further pressure with live role-played phone calls simulating urgent enquiries from journalists, community leaders, and internal stakeholders. Participants were tested on their:

  • Media handling skills under pressure
  • Ability to plan and deliver realistic press conferences
  • Coordination of internal and external Town Hall events

The immersive format helped sharpen communication under pressure, while allowing teams to explore decision-making and message consistency across channels.

Post-exercise evaluation & strategic insights

At the conclusion of the drill, we provided ExxonMobil’s team with a comprehensive feedback report, detailing performance insights, strengths, and tailored recommendations to enhance their crisis communications response in future scenarios.
