How can you test strategic decision-making in a crisis?

NDT Global needed a partner to support the preparation and delivery of two half-day crisis simulations. These simulations were needed to test the crisis response skills of two regional crisis teams in Houston, USA and Stutensee, Germany.

This exercise involved representatives from the company’s business continuity, communications, operations, regulatory and global operations teams.

We focussed on testing participants’ abilities to make strategic decisions and execute priority actions around a high-profile incident impacting the business globally. Under immense time pressure, and with the incident escalating in real-time, the pressure was on to escalate effectively to the global crisis team.

Key elements of this simulation:

  • Local teams working together to escalate to the global crisis team.
  • Involvement of local mayor and local politicians calling for NDT Global to be punished by state authorities.
  • Investigation by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHO).
  • Emphasis on mental wellbeing of staff.

Key results

  • Two exercises involving regional business continuity team members from the USA and Germany.
  • Escalating scenario used to identify gaps and vulnerabilities in existing capabilities and processes.
  • Responses required to employees internally and to external customers and stakeholders.
